Blue Light Blocking Glasses
We will shortly have a dedicated website for our new product but are very excited to be able to offer Blue Light Blocking Glasses, since computers and televisions are another of life's sleep zappers!
If you have teens who work late into the night, or possibly it's you yourself who either by choice or necessity work on laptops/tablet computers or watch television well into the evening, then you may not realise why you can't 'switch' off when you turn off your equipment and jump into bed. Blue light, (principally 460-480nm) is part of the light spectrum within sunlight, but it's also present in artificial lighting for all types of bulbs, light tubes, television and computer screens and some bedside lights. When your body is exposed to this light late in the evening your Melatonin production is blocked and you may find yourself unable to sleep when you need to. Sometimes your circadian clock can be out by up to a couple of hours.
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland, a small endocrine gland in the centre of the brain. The Melatonin levels regulate your sleep-wake cycle by chemically causing drowsiness and lowering your body temperatare in preparation for sleep. As we age we produce less Melatonin further adding to sleep woes by those who indulge with their telly or laptop late at night. Studies show that a teenager's schedule of Melatonin is delayed, also leading to later sleep and wake cycles, again further exascerbated by screen time.
By simply wearing these glasses (in a range of styles to keep the teens happy) for an hour or two before you wish to sleep, your natural Melatonin production will not be blocked. It's a frequent complaint amongst parents, and indeed amongst teens themselves, that they can't sleep until late at night and quite frequently turn off their computers to go to sleep but finding themselves unable to, will hop back up to keep working or playing.
Even preteens who may be allowed an hour or two of screen time prior to bed earlier in the evening would benefit from the glasses since they too frequently cannot sleep around their normal bedtime of 8-9pm in the evening.
Lower Melatonin is not just a nuisance sleep zapper, studies now include it's role as an an antioxidant assisting the immune system to mop up free (cancer causing) radicals and it plays a role in the prevention of cardiac arrhythmia. In preliminary studies on mice, longevity was found to increase by up to 20% with increased Melatonin production. Studies also reflect lower immune cell production and increases in growth of cancer cells of mice when Melatonin is suppressed long term.
Researchers also attribute behavioural changes in teenagers, in particular, with increased risk taking, lower academic achievements, more aggression, higher rates of depression and symptoms of ADHD in those with low Melatonin levels.
I will be including many studies in the following days via the new website but have included preliminary articles at the bottom of this page.
Please note Classics II and Stylistics are designed to fit over your existing spectacles. Celebrities, Novelists and Sophisticates are designed to be worn alone. The glasses come in their own safe case and should be treated with the same care as you would your normal spectacles or sunglasses. Generally speaking, ladies seem to prefer Celebrities while chaps prefer Novelists. Sophisticates seems to attract both men and women. The glasses sell for $127 including delivery.
Also note that I've done my research and I find some companies offering these glasses on Ebay etc at heavily reduced costs. Please be wary of this as they do not offer the same patented coating which filters the specific wavelength of blue light that affects Melatonin production.
